REFUND PROGRAM RETURNS OVER $115 MILLION TO PEOPLE WHO USED MONEYGRAM TO PAY SCAMMERS

Important Settlement Update

In February, the administrator started sending checks totaling more than $115 million to 38,889 people who sent money to scammers using MoneyGram and filed a valid remission request before the deadline. Recipients are getting back the full amount they paid to scammers between January 1, 2013, and December 31, 2017.

If you get a check, please cash it right away.

More Information About the Settlement

In a 2009 settlement with the FTC, MoneyGram agreed to make changes to make it harder for con-artists to use MoneyGram to defraud consumers. However, a joint law enforcement action by the FTC, the Department of Justice (DOJ), and the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) charged that MoneyGram had not done what they agreed to do to reduce fraud.

In 2018, the company agreed to pay money to settle. The money from the settlement was made available to consumers through a process called remission. The USPIS compared remission requests to MoneyGram records and decided whether to approve the petition.
