September 25, 1996 International Global Convention As signatory to this Convention of the International Federation of Direct Marketing Associations, this association pledges, at the earliest practicable opportunity, to introduce into the operation and conduct of its affairs, the following convention standards: 1. To raise the standards and professionalism of direct marketing amongst its member organizations and the industry at large. 2. To communicate the positive values of direct marketing to the public and government officials. 3. To provide the framework for, and to implement, such initiatives as are needed to ensure that the process of direct marketing in our country is conducted in a manner that gives trust and confidence to consumers and business customers. 4. To introduce an effective lobby to ensure that current and planned legislation by our national government meets the reasonable commercial expectations of our members, and represents the balanced interests of all Federation members. 5. To introduce and maintain relevant and effective self-regulatory programmes, such as codes of practice which are adequately enforced. 6. To introduce and maintain consumer preference services (mail and telephone) to be responsive to consumer choice and concerns. 7. To improve standards of business practice through the introduction of such initiatives as best practice guidelines. 8. To introduce, maintain and improve professional development education and training programmes, meeting the reasonable expectations of employers, and to aid career progression amongst direct marketing professionals. 9. To establish a forum for the exchange of information and networking both nationally and internationally. 10.To provide help and assistance to federation members in meeting the above goals and to encourage and assist countries without representation to introduce a representative body for direct marketing.
