Dear Ms. Curtis:

Thank you for your Fax and taking the time to talk with me today.

By way of this letter and the following questions and Answers, please consider this as a formal request to be a part of the 4 day Privacy Work Shop being held on June 10-13, 1997. I will follow this up with a full report as requested.

I would like to attend Session Two: Consumer Online Privacy and Session Three: Children's Online Privacy.

Under Session Two - Consumer Online Privacy - Technological Developments:

Question 2.14 "Has interactive technology evolved since June 1996 in ways that could address online privacy issues? To what extent is it currently available and being used by consumers and commercial Web sites?"

Answer: Technology does exist that allows the individual total control over what is sent or received by his/her computer. This technology is available in the consumer market from a variety of retail channels. Many commercial Web sites offer this type of technology to consumers.

Under Session Three - Children's Online Privacy - Technological Development:

Question 3.14 "Has interactive technology evolved since June 1996 in ways that could address online privacy issues? To What extent is it (a) readily available; (b) currently in use; (c) easy to use: and (d) effective in preventing children from disclosing personally identifiable information.

Answer: Technology does exist that allows the individual total control over what is sent or received by her/his computer. This technology is available in the consumer market from a variety of retail channels. Many commercial Web sites offer this type of technology to consumers. This technology is only as good as the parent or owner of the software becoming involved with the children.

There are many other things that can be done to ensure individual freedoms and privacy are maintained. Technology can control a person's confidential information and how it is given out.

Could you please forward this to the appropriate personal. Thanks again for you help.

If you have any questions, please contact me at (604) 662-8522.

Sincerely,

Gordon A. Ross
