Federal Trade Commission Received Documents Jan 22 1996 B18354900106 Secretary Administrator General Services Administration Washington, DC 20405 Jan 16 1996 Mr. Robert Easton Special Assistant - Enforcement Bureau of Consumer Protection Federal Trade Commission Washington, DC 20580 Dear Mr. Easton: Thank you for your letter regarding the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) efforts to determine whether the current standard for labeling products "Made in America" should be changed. I suggest that we explore the viability of standardizing the FTC's "Made in America" standard with one or more of the Federal government's procurement (e.g., Buy American Act) or trade (e.g., North American Free Trade Agreement) standards. A simple government-wide standard may reduce the difficulty of determining compliance in the procurement of commercial products. If you believe that this approach is viable, I suggest that you contact William S. Coleman, Jr., Deputy Administrator for Procurement Law and Legislation, Office of Federal Procurement Policy and Ms. Ida Ustad, General Services Administration's Deputy Associate Administrator, Office of Acquisition Policy. Sincerely, Roger W. Johnson Administrator cc: William S. Coleman, Jr. Federal Recycling Program - Printed on Recycled Paper
