Federal Trade Commission Received Documents July 18, 1995 B18354900220 Darlene Porter 2864 Bardamar Drive Port Huron, MI 48059 July 14, 1995 Federal Trade Commission Office of the Secretary "Made In The USA" 6th Street & Pennsylvania Ave SW Washington, D.C. 20580 To Whom It May Concern: Regarding the article in the USA Today July 14 requesting input. What do I think that the "Made In USA" label should mean. Different products should have different stipulations. When a product has high labor content, as in the case of the shoemaker New Balance, and if the final assembly is in USA, and more then 50% of the product actually consists "American made material", then I feel it should qualify for the "Made In USA" right. If it wasn't for the fact that we are in a global economy, I would have said 100% of US material to qualify for the "Made In USA" label. It's just not. realistic in such a competitive world to be 100% "Made In USA" - but if there is such a product, best advertising would be to add 100% below "Made In USA". Your feeling is correct that people feel patriotic purchasing items labeled "Made In USA". I for one read labels and have many a time picked up an article, read the label and put it down when it didn't say USA and thought, guess I could get along without this item and did. Sincerely, Darlene Porter
