Federal Trade Commission Received Documents Oct 13 1995 B18354900327 Secretary October 1, 1995 Federal Trade Commission Office of the Secretary "Made in the USA" 6th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, D.C. 20580 Reference: USA Today article, July 14, 1995 Dear Sirs: The referenced article mentioned the FTC was seeking comments on what consumers think "made in the USA" means. To me, "made in the USA" means the product goes through final assembly in the United States and has more than 50% of its total content produced in the USA. Content meaning the value of the raw materials, labor, and other costs to get the product through the final point of assembly and ready for distribution. I would prefer to see the product label that identifies "made in the USA" state the real percent content made in the USA, e.g., 70% USA content, etc. An alternative label could be more than 70% USA content, more than 80%, etc.' It is very important to my family to have this information displayed on products. We consciously shop for products that meet our needs for value - price and quality. Having done that, when making a choice in the market, I want to make purchases on this priority: 1) the product is made in the USA, 2) the product is made in North America, and 3) the product is imported from a nation that trades with the USA on an equal and honest basis. I attempt to avoid any purchases that do not meet my criteria for value and country of origin. I rely on the product label to give me this basic buying information. Sincerely, J.
