Federal Trade Commission Received Documents July 30, 1996 P894219 B18354900339 Congress of the United States House of Representatives Washington, DC 20515-0527 June 21, 1996 Mr. Robert Pitofsky Chairman Federal Trade Commission Pennsylvania Avenue at 6th St. N.W. Washington, DC 20515 Dear Chairman: I am writing in response to your request for public comment concerning the FTC's review of the standard for using the "Made In USA" label. During my 24 years In the Congress, and for more than 20 years prior, the FTC has consistently held that the "Made In USA" label means what it says: that all or virtually all of the product so labeled is of U.S. origin. I want to offer my strong support for the continued applicability of this clear and traditional standard. I urge the Commission to ensure that the standard for the "Made In USA" label is not weakened or diluted In any way. In this day and age of public mistrust of the federal government and its agencies, it seems to me that the last thing we should do is weaken or sully the near sacrosanct label "Made In USA." We live In an increasingly global economy where fewer and fewer products that we buy are all or virtually all made in the U.S. However, this Is no reason to pull the integrity out of the "Made In USA" label. In fact, it should be just the opposite: the fewer the products the truer the label. All Americans should be able to count and rely on the "Made In USA" label and so too should companies which still strive to make products wholly in America and hire Americans. Thank you very much for this opportunity to submit my comments. Cordially, CARLOS J. MOORHEAD Member of Congress CJM:jdj
