I understand that Identity Theft is not nearly as big a problem in Europe as it is here, for two main reasons: 1. Social security numbers are used only for that reason, and not for any other identification, and 2. It is illegal to buy and sell people's names, addresses and other personal information for the purpose of establishing mailing lists or any other reason. I am concerned that ID theft is becoming one of the horrors of living in this century. One does not feel he or she can trust anyone or anything. My father had someone steal his credit card number and charge thousands of dollars to it. I walked out of a doctor's office because they insisted that they needed my SS number to treat me! I fear that everything for which we have worked in our lives risks being stolen by unethical persons who are allowed by law to do the things that make it so easy for them to do their evil deeds. It is appalling and frightening. I have attached a copy of the article from which I took the above information, but I'm sure you can find the original if you look. Please discuss implimenting these same laws in this country. Thank you. Dena Worster Maine
