Comments:Alcholic beverages must display warnings regarding Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Emerging research is indicating that 1 in 100 births are affected by some degree by maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is the leading cause of Mental Retardation in North America. It causes learning disabilities, attention disorders, behavioral disorders and there is a 90% rate of mental illness in people who were prenataly exposed to alcohol. Even minimal to moderate alcohol use during pregnancy leads to disorders such as ADHD and other learning and behavioral problems. As the adoptive parent of three children with FASD, I am reminded daily of the social, emotional and financial costs associated with raising these children, who will one day be adults who will continue to require a great deal of support from societal institutions. Please require the alcohol industry to take responsibility in providing public education in regard to the dangers of alcohol consumption by pregnant women.
