I have been a Shaklee Distributor for the past 1 1/2 years. Originally, I became a Shaklee Distributor because I love the Company's nutritional/personal care/household products, and wanted to earn some additional income while working from home. I believe that the direct sales industry provides one of the best opportunities in this country for the average person to get ahead financially. In a time of declining incomes and increasing expenses in this country, the opportunities that direct sales offers are even more important today than at any other time in our history. People get involved in this industry because building an income is not burdened down with needless red tape. Companies like Shaklee which has been in business for 50 years, already adhere to the highest standards of business practices. What you are proposing will do little to protect consumers but instead will scare off people who are interested in taking advantage of the direct sales industry. This will shut off what could potentially be a great source of additional income to these people. These extra burdens to direct sellers will have a serious and negative impact on this industry that I love and respect. While I appreciate the work of the FTC to protect consumers, I believe this proposed new rule has many inintended consequences for direct sellers and there are less burdensome alternatives to the agency to achieve its goals.
