Dear FTC Commission Members, We have been advised that a proposed Business Opportunity Rule is under consideration, and I would like to voice my opinion with you. Although I totally support fair, ethical business practices, and understand the spirit of the proposal, I believe you may not have considered the impact this will have on direct sellers as a whole. I have been in direct sales now for 11 years, and support my family with it. I work 8-10 hour days, and the job includes going into people's homes, selling my products and offering the Opportunity to join me as a fellow seller. It has been a successful method of sharing product and opportunity, and I disclose my income and the potential and requirements of the job. If we were subject to a 7 day waiting period for new Consultants, we would likely have people who would lose interest and perhaps not join, plus I would have no way of knowing who the 10 closest sellers are to provide the required references. I was one that joined on the spur of the moment, without much forethought and am so glad I did. Direct Selling is my life, and frankly it is hard enough as it is. These regulations would put a strangle hold on my growth potential and I think would also hurt those who are considering getting started as well, by making them wait. Please opt to leave direct sellers who are currently self-regulated through the Direct Selling Association out of this proposal. We are a different animal and provide for a great deal of revenue and job security for many in this country. We are self-governed by the highest ethical standards and this proposal would impose unnecessary and undeserved hardship on us.
