I’m writing this letter in response to your proposed Business Opportunity Rule. I am an independent distributor. I was forced to quit my job as a school secretary to stay home and care for my 89 year-old mother. I have worked for over 2 years to earn enough money to replace my former salary. Direct sales has allowed me to work from home while caring for my mom and family. I have learned to reach out to others and become more confident as a person. I understand that this new ruling will help protect vulnerable people from unfair business practices. I have a friend who was pressured into starting a website referral business and was unable to recoup her money. The company I’m affiliated with is a member of the Direct Selling Association and is fully committed to following the legitimate and fair business practices of the DSA. This new ruling would make it almost impossible for me to effectively pursue my distributorship. My family depends on the money that I earn. Having to comply with several of these new rules would create new financial burdens and will also impact the already short amount of time I have to pursue new customers. Please consider revising your new rules to target those companies who do not already comply with good business practices. I cannot emphasize enough how devastating these rules could be to my current business.
