Dear Federal Trade Commission Member: I am writing to ask that you reconsider some of the requirements you are proposing to regulate the direct sales industry. I do understand that you are trying to protect people from fly-by-night business scams, and disreputable business dealings, but this proposal will adversely effect legitimate businesses as well. I am a PartyLite Consultant who has been proud to be involved in this business for 4 years. I began my PartyLite business to have a little extra Holiday money and get some great Holiday decorations for my home. The income I earn has allowed me to help with family bills and allow a few extras such as a night out at the movies, or a fancy dinner. The proposals you are suggesting would make my business much more difficult and possibly impact my income. Specifically, in terms of the references requirement, I would never feel comfortable providing the personal contact information of other people in PartyLite, nor would I want my own personal information given out freely. As for the 7 day waiting period, I have found that people who have to wait to get started usually lose interest. They are excited and motivated “at the moment”. In our business, people are able to start right away, sometimes even using a friends current show as their own “starter show”. If they decide it isn’t for them, they are able to quit at any point and keep the starter kit (which they earn for free), money they have earned as well as bonuses they may have earned. There are no penalties. I feel good about sharing PartyLite’s very real business opportunity with others, and want to continue to easily introduce PartyLite to more people who could benefit as I have. The regulations you are proposing would hinder me from doing so – and would hinder others in starting their business in the timeframe they choose. Please know that I’m thankful that we have the FTC working to protect average consumers like me, but in this case, you will be working against me, impacting my income, my future and my family’s future. Please reconsider the regulations you are proposing. Respectfully yours, Pamela A. Burley
