Dear legislatures: I am very concerned about the proposed legislation. I am a nurse and have been able to have a consulting business out of my home for 2 years, and a wonderful direct marketing affiliation with my business that allows me to create affordable alternative healthcare choices for my clients. One reason that I left hospital nursing (ICU 18 years) was because of the overwhelming paperwork that gave me little time to spend with my patients and took the autonomy away from my work. People need to be aware of what they are doing when they research direct marketing companies. I researched many companies because it is my responsiblity to protect my patients. It is the same with healthcare. People have a responsibility for their own health and lifestyle and need to make educated decisions. This does not include signing another form or dotting another "i". A well educated person will be able to make their own choices. A franchise owner or any other business owner makes a calculated decision before starting a business. Direct marketing is an excellent way for those who are willing to work hard with very little start up money to have a nice business and do well. I was never told that this business was easy, but that hard work over time would pay off, and it has. I believe that we need to see this type of business as moving more into the mainstream. We should not respond with fear, but with open awareness that allows people to "pull themselves up by their bootstraps". I cannot imagine adding this added burden on my already very busy life. Respectfully, Ann Cowper RN, BSN Infusion
