Dear Federal Trade Commission Member: I am writing to ask that you reconsider some of the requirements you are proposing to regulate the direct sales industry. I am a PartyLite Consultant who has been proud to be involved in this business for over two years. I began my PartyLite business only to keep myself occupied while my husband was overseas for ten months with the U.S. Marine Corps. I intended to sell PartyLite for a short period of time until I began meeting great new people and started to understand how I can help others achieve their dreams through the wonderful business opportunity that is PartyLite. The income I earn has allowed me and my husband to live debt free so we can start saving for our first home. The proposals you are suggesting would make my business much more difficult and possibly impact my income. Specifically, in terms of the references requirement, I would never feel comfortable providing the personal contact information of other people in PartyLite, nor would I want my own personal information given out freely. I feel good about sharing PartyLite’s very real business opportunity with others at any chance I get, and want to continue to easily introduce PartyLite to anyone else who could benefit as I have. The regulations you are proposing would hinder me from doing so – and would hinder others in starting their business in the timeframe they choose. Starting a PartyLite business is a very simple and possibly lucrative endeavor that offers unlimited possibilities and I would hate to see consultants, including myself, struggle to share what we have to offer simply because of the requirements put in place as a result of companies who have to scam or trick people to get ahead. Please know that I’m thankful that we have the FTC working to protect average consumers like me, but in this case, you will be working against me, impacting my income, my future and my family’s future. In a couple of weeks PartyLite Consultants across the country will be attending our 2006 National Conference Event in St. Louis, Missouri. This event draws nearly 10,000 highly motivated and successful women AND men every year due to the energy, positive influence, and sense of family our company displays. After attending Conference last year, I never felt more proud to be a part of a something or more thankful that I decided to give PartyLite a try a couple of years ago. Members of the FTC would benefit from attending an event like this if necessary to obtain a real picture of our PartyLite family and the values they teach. Please reconsider the regulations you are proposing. Respectfully yours, Kari Kane Wisconsin, USA
