Generally, I am in favor of disclosure laws. However, those outlined by the FTC in this instance are excessive for this type of business. Direct selling organizations offer individuals the opportunity to achieve financial freedom through a business with very low startup, as well as maintenance, costs. Individuals are given a business compendium & have every opportunity to review information about the business prior to becoming involved. Under the Quixtar agreement, any money that a person has invested (anywhere from $60 - $120) is fully refundable within the first 30 days. After this time, optional continuing education is available at a relatively low cost & products can be purchased at will. In comparison to the traditional business market, the earning potential in the direct selling business far outweighs the amount of money that can be invested. In fact, the Direct Selling opportunity is the closest thing I can imagine to the American Dream, where a person of any age, ethnic, educational or financial background has the chance to succeed at a very high level - relative only to the amount of effort he or she is willing to give it. This is Free Enterprise at its best.
