Dear Federal Trade Commission Member: I am writing to ask that you reconsider some of the requirements you are proposing to regulate the direct sales industry. I am a PartyLite Consultant who has been proud to be involved in this business for 4 years. I began my PartyLite business to get free candles, never thinking that I could actually earn an income. The income I earn has allowed me to quit my full time job in middle management, purchase a new car and travel like never before (thoroughly stimulating the economy).Because of my role as a PartyLite Leader, I have had and will have, with your support, the opportunity mentor hundreds of women & men to do the same. The proposals suggested would make my business much more difficult and directly impact my income. In terms of the references requirement, I would never feel comfortable providing the personal contact information of other people in PartyLite, nor would I want my own personal information given out freely. If I had to respond to phone calls and inquiries from Consultant prospects other than mine and those of my lineage, I’d have no time to work on my own business. I feel good about sharing PartyLite’s very real business opportunity with others, and want to continue to easily introduce PartyLite to more people who could benefit as I have. The regulations you are proposing would hinder me from doing so – and would hinder others in starting their business in the timeframe they choose. Additionally, I believe the regulations you propose are a bit insulting to adults. Are we not capable of making our own decisions? Must the decision to start a small home business be more regulated than that of purchasing a gun? I have very real concerns as an American citizen about this regulation. Please know that I’m thankful that we have the FTC working to protect average consumers like me, but in this case, you will be working against me, impacting my income, my future and my family’s future. The proposed regulations will impact my business and income together with that of the members if my lineage. Respectfully yours, Matt James Unit Leader PartyLite Gifts, Inc.
