I have a been in direct sales for more than 8 years, and love what I do. I just started with lia sophia, and feel that passing the law stated above would very much endanger a popular business idea that is growing due to the many benefits it provides everyone. As a mother only interested in staying at home with my children and raising them as opposed to having someone else raise them, this is how I chose to do it. I believe, and have seen, that businesses like mine help single parents, stay at home mothers, people looking for extra income, and people just looking to get out of the house. Passing this law will make it very difficult for people who are offering a fantastic business opportunity to others they believe will benefit from it, as well as people looking to get into any direct sales business. A seven day waiting period will only serve to encourage distrust in a business already weighted down by false beliefs that we all are in a "pyramid structure", and only want for ourselves. Bear in mind that in a true direct sales business, I can not make money off of anyone's sales that I sponsor unless I am also doing the work. Therefore, you can look at corporations in America today as pyramids, not direct sales companies, because only one person in a corporation can make the big bucks....in a true direct sales company, anyone can if they are willing to work at it. I have always been an honest person, because I believe you get what you dish out. I believe that the few people who are not doing the right thing in direct sales are few and far between and that the rest of us should not be punished by passing this law. We work just as hard as anyone in corporate America, and in white and blue collar America, and deserve to be treated the same way. Nowhere in America today do you have to wait to sign a contract with a corporation to go work for them, why should it be any different for us? Have you heard from someone when they say, "I went to work for so and so, and was supposed to get so many hours of vacation and only got 15."? I have, and you're not trying to pass a law for corporations the way you are for us. It simply is not fair, especially when being self employed gives you the right to get out of the business at any time without any repurcussions. If anything, the businesses suffer more when dishonesty happens in direct sales than the consultants. This law is not helpful to anyone. Please reconsider passing it and ruining the lives of so many people who have made direct sales their business of choice, for whatever reason. Thank you for your time. Wendy McNamee
