I am writing to express strong opposition to the proposed Business Opportunity Rule R511993. I understand that the FTC must protect the public from unfair practices but the rule as proposed would make it very difficult for me to operate my business as a Shaklee Independent Distributor. Shaklee will be 50 years old this year and is well respected in the business community. Why should those of us who are building a business after taking their products for 25 years be asked to do more than someone selling dog food or a TV? I particularly do not like the fact that people have to be given 7 days before enrolling as a new distributor. Some people are looking for work and plan to combine usage of products with sharing with others about the products with the hope that they will be better physically and have opportunities for growth themselves. Most of my customers chose to use the products for a month before deciding, but not all are willing to do this. So why should they be denied the opportunity to be distributor and why should I be deprived of their interest in the form of income to me? Waiting 7 days makes it sound like we are putting them at risk. We only charge $19.95 for membership in Shaklee and this provides them with the opportunity to get their products at a discount. Here we are trying to get more people to have better health and not have to look to doctors and prescriptions for good health. You are trying to make them reconsider a wellness program and instead be satisfied with illness in the future. As I understand it, you also are proposing that I divulge 10 prior purchasers nearest to the prospective purchaser. Number one: I do not want to provide information that is supposed to be private between my customer and me. Number two: how do I know that the people I give the list of 10 to are not going to solicite my customers for another company's products. These requirement are unfair to me and to my customers. I have been a Shaklee distributor for a year and a half after using the products for 25 years. When I retired, I decided to earn some extra income to supplement Social Security. This bill is a big discouragement to me and to the wonderful company I work for. Please stop this nonsense now. Thank you for considering my comments. Sincerely, Bev Lehenbauer
