As a reputable, permission based marketer and marketing consultant, I see the impact of SPAM and fraudulent email practices every day. Yet there is a significant number of legitimate reasons to communicate with email -including 'selling' to current clients, interested prospects and people who have agreed to receive third party advertising. The ability to track and enforce most of the rules under the current law is highly limited and actually costs REAL marketers a lot of time and money, while not dealing with the perpetrators of SPAM and fraud any better. Real businesses do often use PO boxes as addresses. Real businesses do have multiple "from" email addresses, to track campaigns, or business units or divisions, etc. Real businesses use terms like 'marketing', 'advertising', 'offer', 'free', etc. to let their OWN CUSTOMERS know about new things. I use those terms just to supply TIPS and education to my clients on how to be better marketers! There is no easy way out of this. The re-routing of emails via forwarding ability might be one hole to close, even though I also use that myself to consolidate accounts. I don't have the answers necessarily, but beg you to look at the day to day use of email for GOOD reasons. Forwarding to a friend is one of our best ways to build brand! It's the same as telling someone you know about a great restaurant, a good experience, a fantastic deal they shouldn't miss. You would prevent all first hand referrals if this ability is constrained. People will just have to delete unwanted email, just like tuning out ads on TV or radio if they don't want to pay attention- or throw out direct mail they don't want. Thanks for gathering input.
