Re: CAN-SPAM Act Rulemaking, Project No. R411008 To the Commissioners, I applaud your efforts to curb the problem of unsolicited bulk email. However, I am concerned about the proposed requirement for merchants to maintain suppression lists. There are so many problems and costs associated with this idea, and so much damage done to consumers and businesses alike, that I feel I must urge you to consider this matter most carefully. Requirement of the use of suppression lists will seriously damage many of the legitimate publications available on the net. My specific concern is for harm to publishers who require permission from the consumer prior to adding them to any list. They're not who CAN-SPAM was designed to put out of business, but this requirement will very likely have that effect. There's also the potential for significant harm to consumers, because of the problem of properly knowing their intent when they unsubscribe from a list. On top of that, these suppression lists could easily fall into the hands of spammers, leading to more spam instead of less. I was quite surprised at the potential problems this ruling could involve, and urge you in the strongest possible terms to reconsider its implementation in light of these problems. I believe that I should have the right to share with my friends and family what I deem to be valuable information, products and services. I Do Not believe that this act will accomplish what you are expecting it to do. I firmly believe that it will only hurt those of us that do follow the rules; putting people and businesses out-of business. Those who disregard the rules will always continue to do so. As an example, I probably get 10 emails a day from motgage companies, I do not own a home, never have, I don't even rent! How did they get my address? I have no idea...This is Spam with out a doubt. That is what the delete button is for. Why can't people get a life, instead of making something out of nothing. I Have A HUGE Problem with the government telling me that I can't send emails to individuals THAT I KNOW sharing with them a great workshop, book, product, service, My personal website. YOU HAVE NOT RIGHT TO SENSOR ME, KEEP ME FROM SHARING VALUABLE INFORMATION, PRODUCTS, SERVICES etc. I do have a website that I earn a living on and of course I want others to share that information with anyone that they think will be interested in it.This new Can Spam act could in essence force me out of business. Thanks, but NO THANKS. In case you have forgotten, this is AMERICA Respectfully, Sherry Dillard Oregon, USA
