Re: CAN-SPAM Act Rulemaking, Project No. R411008 To: Commissioners, Like most who conduct business online, I'm glad to see our government taking action against spam. In the case of the the proposal about maintaining suppression lists, however, I believe more harm than good will result. Requiring suppression lists could cripple the business of legitimate publications on the net. While they currently are happy to comply with opt-in policies that insure the subscriber wants to receive their newsletter, the need to share all lists and check all lists that might contain the subscriber's name becomes an almost impossible task. Rather than risk the liability, such businesses will simply have to stop publishing. I know you face a tough problem. But please consider this ruling carefully to make sure it impacts those it's meant to put out of business, the spammers, not all the legitimate small businesses who want to honor consumer wishes.
