Dear Federal Trade Commission:
I am writing to you in support of the petition to require “Professional Wet Cleaning” to the cleaning labels of garments. Dry Cleaning has been an industry that I have been exposed to through my family and I have recently realized all of the benefits that Professional Wet Cleaning offers both in terms of the health of consumers as they are no longer exposed to the harsh chemicals used in Dry Cleaning processes and also the environment.
I believe that many consumers are informed to the extent that information is readily provided to them. Many individuals purchase clothes and look to their garment care labels to determine how best to care for their garments; presumably many do not look outside the four corners of their labels to see what alternatives are available to them. As such, it is imperative that we make the availability of Professional Wet Cleaning known to all consumers so that they are made aware of the safer cleaning alternatives that are present and available in their communities.
There will indeed by some upfront costs to implementing new guidelines on garment labeling and also for manufacturers who need to change their current labels. However, once the changes are implemented, the burden on the FTC and garment manufacturers should not be too great. Moreover, the costs will not be great enough to outweigh the benefits that revised labels will provide, which is the education of everyday consumers of safer alternatives to traditional Dry Cleaning.
In order to make this environment a healthier one that will last for generations to come, we need to make the right decisions and choices in the present day. Please support the efforts of the Professional Wet Cleaning industry and environmentally-conscious individuals in making our world a cleaner and more green place by effecting change through garment labeling. Although this may not seem like it would have a huge impact, the decisions of each individual help the efforts of the aggregate whole to succeed in making a greater change for the health of the everyday consumer and for the environment.
