As a parent and an advocate for children I very strongly encourage the FCC to protect children in every way possible from allowing advertisers from tracking children's activities online and preventing advertisers from directly targeting them. Children are vulnerable and unsophisticated consumers, easy prey for child molesters and sexual predators and unable to distinguish between personal information and healthy boundaries.
Even the most sophisticated security software is not sophisticated enough to keep children safe from advertisers who want to exploit children with behavioral advertising and one-to-one advertising. For instance, I write a website called The Girl Revolution and attempted to use Google Adsense and Google Adwords, two extremely common, advertising and marketing strategies on my website. But the software only recognized the word "girl" and the word "girl" automatically registered and brought up advertising for soft porn, mail order brides, Internet games like MyBimbo.com that encouraged kids to pick their own avatars who could buy plastic surgery like giant fake boobs, sexy lingerie, etc. When I contacted Google about this issue they said it was a robot that chose based on my website's language and "girl" was the keyword so there was nothing they could do. So essentially kids, especially "girls" are at risk for the same kinds of targeted advertising.
Another example of targeted advertising using the word "girl' is that because The Girl Revolution is in my email signature Gossip Girl, an extremely provocative television series featuring a great deal of sex, rape, drug use, alcohol use, etc. targeted me for their advertising which was featured right over my "check mail" button. I could not check my mail without watching their advertising which was a 30 second sex scene between two characters. This is a television show targeted to little girls between the ages of 12 to 17. The advertisers targeted the word "girl." Any age kid might of been targeted.
This is inappropriate and dangerous. The FCC needs to update the law to prevent this from happening. I highly encourage you to do so.
