I strongly support your efforts through the Interagency Working Group, and the voluntary industry guidelines that food marketed to children contain fruits, vegetables and whole grains, while limiting sodium, sugars, and saturated fats.
Our country has a health crisis. We are dealing with increasing numbers of obese people, and the health disorders that result. Too much of the attention and dollars is on medical care, instead of prevention, resulting in a loss of quality of life and productivity. It costs us more money to deal with the consequences than if we prevented them from happening in the first place.
I work with preschoolers, and an increasing number of them are overweight. Four year olds that don't have necks because they have so much excess weight! We try to do our best as an agency to educate parents about nutrition; we also provide healthy meals and snacks for the children while they are in the program. However, we can't do it alone. It takes all of us. The food and beverage industry should not make our children sick and unhealthy in order to make a larger profit.
I thank the IWG for its strong nutrition and marketing guidelines, and urge you to finalize them by the end of the year. Keep up the fight against the pressure of big industry.
Thank you for speaking out.
