While I'm not sure how I accessed and received my free credit report, I began noticing charges on my credit card for periodic updates that I didn't request. When I determined where the charges were coming from and called them to protest, I was told that by NOT OPTING OUT of the updates, I had somehow agreed to them. It took being somewhat beligerant with the person on the phone that the practice was discontinued, but the charges that had appeared to date were not removed or credited. More you snooze, you lose, but the terms of the updates were not made clear to me at the outset. Make it illegal or OPT IN, not OPT OUT.
