As a multi-discipline contractor and a Professional Engineer, I believe that there needs to be strict guidelines for materials, means and methods that are presentesd as environmentally friendly, renewable or "green." The consumer becomes vulnerable to claims of energy savings and reduction of carbon footprints without knowing how to quantify either of these claims, or understand the return on investment, when evaluating these items and issues. There is a definate increase in cost associated with the environmentally friendly construction materials and methods, and the increased cost is not specific when exposed to the end user. This needs to be done so that a realistic discussion and decision can be made about which direction to take when moving forward. Withour strict guidelines, the "green" movement becomes smoke and mirrors.
