Comments:I have just finished a 5 page research paper on the dangers of tanning and it is absolutley necessary information the public should know about. I believe that providing infomrmed consent is just as important for tanning beds as any other procedure or product available. If people choose to continue to tan despite the risk involved, that is their choice. However, at this time, the public is not fully aware of risks and is overwhelmed with statistics and "facts" that hide the real medical explanations associated with indoor tanning. The most important thing for indoor tanners to know, is that just because they are tanning in a "UVB free bed" UVA rays are just as, if not more dangerous, as they penetrate deeper into the skin and increase their risk for Melanoma. The Skin Cancer Foundation also released information in last month's news letter saying that indoor tanning increases a individual's risk for Melanoma by 75%. At current, tanning beds are only classified as a level one medical device- the same as a tounge depressor! This needs to be changed to a level two or three to ensure FDA regulations and research. The public should be aware of all these facts before they are putting their lives at risk by tanning indoors.
