I am writing to you regarding the Fairness to Pet Owners Act. I do not feel that the Fairness to Pet Owners Act is necessary, and in fact will endanger many pets' lives. This act would force me to authorize prescriptions for pets at human pharmacies. This practice will hurt revenue for veterinary clinics, which are small businesses that are already struggling to survive in this economy. Also, human pharmacies know little to nothing about animal diseases and physiology. I have personally dealt with situations where my clients have filled prescriptions at human pharmacies, and the pharmacist changed the prescription because he felt that the dosage was incorrect. Little did the pharmacist know that dog medication for thyroid conditions must be much stronger than for humans. As a result, the dog suffered from its thyroid condition much longer than it should have.
