Written prescriptions are already provided to clients who request such prescriptions. Requiring that a written prescription be provided when the medication is filled in the veterinary office may result in pet owner's obtaining more medication than is necessary, especially in the instance of controlled substances in small animal veterinary medicine. This could also be a factor in large animal veterinary medicine and the avoidance of residues in our meat supply.
Additionally, veterinary medicine uses different terminology in some cases which could result in prescriptions being filled with inappropriate instructions or amounts.
There is no need for a federal law to regulate the writing of prescriptions by licensed veterinary professionals.
