We are writing regarding the upcoming bill HR-1406, The Fairness to Pet Owners Act. we are extremely concerned about this bill for three reasons.
Firstly, if Veterinarians are forced to write a prescription every time we prescribe a particular medication and provide written disclosure forms to clients this will increase the amount of paperwork which takes up more time and uses more resources. This in turn drives up costs. In the current economic downturn people are struggling to provide Veterinary care to their pets. We are doing everything we can to keep costs down.
Secondly, we believe that with advertising for online pharmacies ubiquitous (T.V., magazines, radio and online) all of our clients are already aware that they can purchase their medications elsewhere. In addition we always provide written prescriptions when asked thus rendering this bill unecessary.
Finally, purchasing medications through Veterinarians is the best option for clients. Veterinarians are the only individuals trained to provide the best guidance and education to pet owners when dispensing prescription medications. This is extremely important to ensure that medications are used safely.
For all of these reasons we strongly oppose HR-1406 The Fairness to Pet Owners Act.
