As a private practice veterinarian, I always provide prescriptions for any client who requests a prescription. I educate my owners about their prescription and medication options, including generic and over the counter alternatives. I absolutely find it disgusting that there is a bill out there requiring me to produce prescriptions for every drug that I recommend for my patients. Most of my clients depend upon the availability of their prescription drugs in my clinic; they rely upon the convenience and the expertise of my technicians when these drugs are dispensed to them. Human pharmacists are not trained to understand how medications affect my clients' pets, and to rely upon them to dispense every one of my medications with thorough guidance to my clients is unreasonable.
