I do not support mandating that we as veterinarians have to offer prescriptions for every client. By doing so, the way I practice becomes limited and is dictated to me by lawmakers who may not have the knowledge to do so. The client has the right and ability to request a prescription. I have called in prescriptions in the past at the client request if I feel it is appropriate for an individual patient.
Pharmacists can make mistakes. They do not understand that drug dosages are not the same in all cases as human dosages. Are pharmacists going to be required to take classes on animal drugs, doses, side effects, and drug interactions? Veterinarians are the best trained advocates for the health and safety of our patients.
Animal medications need to remain under the control of the veterinarian. As a vet, I am thinking of what is best for the animal and doing my best to live up to the oath I took when I graduated from vet school.
