I am writing as a pet owner. We have a very good veterinarian, but nonetheless, have found it difficult to get them to write prescriptions for us. Instead, they have set up their own "online pharmacy" as an alternative to picking up the meds at their front counter, but it's really the same thing. They will offer multiple excuses for not writing a prescription, and don't have prescription pads.
As a result, we routinely overpay for prescriptions that could be gotten cheaper elsewhere, either via a pet supply company or retail pharmacy.
I would request:
Untangle veterinary care from medications, as is done in the human medical field, to discourage abuse/overprescribing/price gouging
Make heartworm medicine and oral flea medicine over the counter
Give pet owners basic legal rights to demand prescriptions from their veterinarians that can be filled in any pharmacy
Improve regulation and oversight of online pet medicine distributors
Improve regulation and oversight of drug manufacturers, particularly around pricing
