This is yet another exploratory into regulation of a part of our profession that doesn't need regulating. We have always given a client a script when requested or when we knew that they could obtain the prescription for less. But with (what?) a third of human prescriptions never being filled let alone the course finished many of our animal patients would never have their scripts picked up let alone given.
The other problem is that many of these are species specific so human pharmacies aren't going to have them nor have a pharmacy who can detail the client on all the contraindications for their pet. So that means the client will have to depend on mail order pharmacies and the pet would be started on the appropriate drug for days.
We also don't have the staff to write a prescription every time and then have the doctor wait to sign it and get it into the medical record.
Please don't consider another regulation for an over regulated nation and state...
