In my practice there are several times that I prescribe medications for patients that are filled outside the practice, but in those instances the owner of the patient and myself have a good discussion about different brand name meds vs. generic and all the other issues involved with drug selection. If this ruling forces all veterinarians to write prescriptions blindly, I am afraid that several miscommunications will occur from the increased paperwork and lack of verbal discussion! More importantly in my state a veterinarian can not fill a written prescription. He or she can only dispense drugs DIRECTLY to patients from their pharmacy, which means this new law would contradict current practice law. I am against this bill!
