Comments about the use of social security numbers in the private sector: We live in Phoenix, Arizona. You cannot get the water turned on to your house or apartment UNLESS you give your social security number. When a customer calls the water department with ANY kind of question, the first thing you are asked is for your social security number. When I protested about this I was informed "all our employees are very honest and would NEVER misuse private information." When a person applies for a KOHLS credit card you must give your social security number and when you call with any kind of question, the SS number is the first question you must answer. When I protested having to use my SS number I was told I could lnot have a Kohls card if I did not cooperate. ALL MEDICAL ACCOUNTS use the patient's ss number. Thats how patients are identified, is by that number. It is NOT an identification number for anything except SS. All mutual funds and brokerage accounts are identified by the customers' SS number. Until just recently the state of Arizona made people put their SS number on their drivers license. There is NO way the average citizen can NOT give out their ss number.. so now we have identity theft. sincerely JoAnn Baughman
