I, for one, do not know why Non-financial, non-insurance, non-employer, commercial entities, like Phone and CableTV companies have made it a habit of either recording, using, or requesting (for verification) either full 9-digit or Last-4-digit SSN's when having CableTV, telephone, DSL, or High-speed Internet service troubleshooting. I understand the Credit report and banking industry side, the rest of the service industry side, I DO NOT understand after reading the 1935 laws that est. the Soc. Sec. Number as a Retirement Acct. No. [in "Economic Security Act" as its first natme, no less] in the first place. I would like FTC's comments, thoughts on this creeping of requirements and overuse of SSNs.
