I believe that an individual's right to privacy should override corporate business models that rely on the collection of personal information. As such, I believe that the law should require full opt-in permission from the individual prior to data collection by a /specific/ business, rather than the current practice of "by using our service, you accept that any and all data that we can find out about you will be shared with anyone and everyone we choose to partner with". This change should include everything including address, products purchased, credit, DOB, SSN, etc. etc. To address the request for comment specifically, I do not see any valid reason for businesses to solicit SSN information unless directly required to do so by law. As such, I would like to see the FTC issue a mandate requiring private businesses to cease and desist from collecting SSN information, as well as destroying any SSN information that they currently have in their possession.
