It should only be used for its stated purpose, Social Security. As my kids would say; DUH! While companies may consider it a nuisance, they should generate their own #'s. Inconvenient to consumers? Maybe, but billions lost in fraud is passed right along. Along with shutting down the use of the SSN, you need to hammer the credit and banking industry for failing to provide better safeguards for identity/credit fraud. If there is no penalty, they do not care. Their profits are all they care about, and none of them appear to be in danger of heading to the poor house.
