Comments:
In 2006, our bank processed 409 Debit card disputed transactions, 299 forged checks, 127 unauthorized EFT transactions, but only 4 identity theft affidavits. Overall, the business community is quite responsible with customer information such as social security numbers. We have an obligation to protect such information and have always taken that obligation very seriously - even prior to the very costly and unnecessary Graham Leach Bliley Act. The focus on restricting legitimate business from using social security numbers is misguided. The focus should be on vigorous efforts to apprehend and punish criminals who misuse social security numbers.
