Subject: Cigarette and Smokeless Tobacco Reports I would like to express support for continuation of the FTC Reports on tobacco industry marketing. Recently the Delaware Health Fund Advisory Committee completed its recommendations to the Delaware General Assembly for fiscal year 2002 spending of Delaware's share of the master tobacco settlement. In year one, there allocated only $ 2.8 million for tobacco control from a total expenditure of $ 17.4 million (the rest went into a reserve fund). This year they recommended an increase of tobacco control and prevention expenditures to $ 5 million. We had distributed the FTC report on tobacco industry marketing to all committee members when it came out over a month ago. Although it is uncertain to what extent the FTC information had on the Advisory Committee decision, it was a useful piece of information and the committee appreciated receiving it via the Delaware IMPACT Tobacco Coalition. We encourage the FTC to continue compiling and distributing information on tobacco industry marketing expenditures. Thank you. Rob Simmons, Dr.PH, MPH, CHES |
