The do not call list has given me peace and quiet at home. As a software engineer who works from home I value this greatly! Pre-recorded messages are even more annoying than human telemarketers; allowing them would undermine the do-not-call list. And I certainly do not want to waste my time going through unwanted messages on my answering machine. Finally, I'd like to point out that telemarketing does not serve the public good; there is no compelling interest to allow it. Like gambling it's just a way to fleece people who can't say no. If the product/service was worth it then a direct mailing would suffice to sell it.
