As someone who works on behalf of low-income and often unsophisticated consumers, and who has herself been hornswoggled by fast-talking used car dealers, I suggest changes to the Buyer Guide section that states:
"AS IS - NO DEALER WARRANTY
THE DEALER WON'T PAY FOR ANY REPAIRS. The dealer is not responsible for any repairs regardless of what anybody tells you."
To protect all buyers and conform with Virgina law, the AS IS section should state:
"THE DEALER DENIES RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY REPAIRS. The dealer acknowledges that this vehicle is not fit to be sold as a car." [Followed by a description of damage or defects found when the vehicle was inspected.]
Dealers also should be required to state if a manufacturer's warranty still applies.
