FTC sends refunds to former AT&T customers
The FTC is sending payments totaling nearly $6.3 million to 267,734 former AT&T customers who filed a valid claim before the deadline.
The FTC sued AT&T, and the company agreed to settle. According to the FTC’s lawsuit, AT&T unfairly reduced data speeds for customers with unlimited data plans, a practice known as “data throttling.” After customers reached a monthly threshold, they experienced data speeds so slow that many common activities like web browsing and video streaming were difficult or impossible.
As a result of the settlement, in 2020, AT&T issued bill credits to current customers and sent checks to former customers, which resulted in $52 million in refunds. Now, the FTC is sending payments to eligible consumers who didn’t already get a payment.
