FTC Staff Meeting on "Consumer Identity Fraud"

Federal Trade Commission staff meeting to gather and exchange information about the problem of “consumer identity fraud” -- the theft and misuse of consumers’ identifying information to establish fraudulent credit accounts -- will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 20, from 9 a.m. to noon, at FTC headquarters in Washington, D.C., 600 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., in Room 432.

Consumers who have been the victims of this type of fraud, as well as representatives of local police organizations and other federal law enforcement agencies, members of the credit industry and representatives of consumer groups, will participate at the meeting. The FTC staff said its goal is to learn more about the growth of consumer identity fraud and the problems it creates for consumers and the credit industry, and efforts by industry and others to deter or prevent such fraudulent activity from occurring and to assist consumers who have been victimized.

The meeting is open to the media and the general public.
