The Federal Trade Commission has reopened and extended until December 3, 1997, the public comment period to provide interested members of the public an additional fifteen days to submit written comments regarding the proposed consent agreement with Jenny Craig, Inc., and Jenny Craig International, Inc.

In May 1997, the FTC announced a proposed settlement agreement with Jenny Craig to resolve deceptive advertising charges concerning the diet program's claims about weight loss, weight loss maintenance, price and safety, as well as its use of consumer testimonials and endorsements. The proposed consent agreement was placed on the public record for a 60-day comment period, which ended August 4, 1997. The Commission received two comments.

On October 7, 1997, the Commission solicited public comment regarding a proposed consent agreement with Weight Watchers International, Inc., a major competitor of Jenny Craig. In light of the Weight Watchers agreement, the Commission has decided to reopen the Jenny Craig public comment period.

A notice announcing extending the public comment period will appear in the November 18 Federal Register. Commenters do not need to resubmit comments previously submitted to the Commission. At the close of the new public comment period, the FTC will consider the comments already received, as well as any new comments.

The Commission vote to extend the public comment was 3-0, with Chairman Robert Pitofsky recused.
