The Federal Trade Commission today announced the appointment of Barbara Anthony, a former top aide in the office of the Massachusetts Attorney General, as Director of its Northeast Region office.
The FTC's new Northeast Region serves the eight states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. The office is located in New York City in the Alexander Hamilton Customs House. The appointment is effective October 4.
Anthony has a well-deserved reputation as a consumer protection and health care advocate. She served for eight years as an Assistant Attorney General and Chief of the Public Protection Bureau for the Massachusetts Office of the Attorney General, where she managed a large staff and focused on a broad range of consumer protection and antitrust issues including health care, predatory lending, and deceptive retail advertising. Prior to her service with the Attorney General, Anthony was Chief Compliance Officer at BayBanks, Inc.; Assistant Secretary for the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation; and a trial attorney in the Department of Justice's Antitrust Division in Washington, D.C.
Anthony obtained a B.S. in business administration and a master of arts in economics from Northeastern University. She is a graduate of Suffolk University Law School.
The FTC's new Northeast Region is part of the agency's reconfiguration of its regional office system. The new seven-region system is part of a larger Commission-wide effort to make its operations more responsive to consumers by incorporating new technologies and increasing its efficiency. As a competition center, the Northeast Region is one of the three regional offices that will focus on antitrust matters as well as consumer protection matters.
