FTC Chairman Robert Pitofsky to Resign Effective May 31, 2001

Federal Trade Commission Chairman Robert Pitofsky announced his resignation from the Commission, effective close of business Thursday, May 31, 2001, in a letter dated May 25, 2001 to President George W. Bush.

The text of the letter is as follows:

Dear Mr. President:

By this letter, I tender my resignation as Commissioner and Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission, effective May 31, 2001.

The Federal Trade Commission's principal responsibilities relate to preserving markets against anti-competitive intrusions and protection of consumers from unfair and deceptive practices. I believe completely in the validity of those goals and as a result have found it a privilege to chair this agency for a little more than 6 years. I hope and expect that this agency will continue to play a useful role in advancing the goals of a free, vigorous and fair economic system.
