The growth of the global Internet has created an interconnected world where security is only as strong as its weakest link. A recent Computer Security Institute/FBI survey found that 90 percent of practitioners polled had suffered security breaches within the previous 12 months, with 80 percent acknowledging financial loss due to the attacks.
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), which encompasses the 30 most advanced industrialized nations, recently updated its Guidelines for the Security of Information Systems and Networks to reflect the more interconnected nature of computer networks. This "call to action" is the next step in fostering an online "culture of security" among companies both large and small. Commissioner Swindle is head of the United States Delegation to the OECD Experts Group for Review of the 1992 OECD Guidelines for the Security of Information Systems and Networks.
